Relishing their new lifestyle - the Tyson family Back to 'Case Studies'

The Tyson family – Richard, Joanna and their four children aged 3 to 16 – were looking for a lifestyle change, and found it in Taranaki.

The Tysons moved to Taranaki from Bombay, Auckland, where they had been living since returning from the UK in 1998. Regular visitors to Taranaki for meetings and long weekends, a role as a Regional Distribution Centre Manager with dairy giant Fonterra was the opportunity the family needed to create the lifestyle they’d always wanted.

“We had spent a lot of time in Taranaki and really loved that it had both a small town feel and so much going on. It really seemed to offer the best of both worlds.”

Richard splits his job between Hawera and New Plymouth, and despite living in the rural community of Egmont Village, still has only a 15-minute commute to New Plymouth.

“In Auckland I had a 40 minute commute through the motorway and gridlock, which I was reminded of when we went back up recently. It’s just so much easier to live in Taranaki” Richard says.

Richard is relishing his new role with Fonterra, Taranaki’s largest employer, and the investment they make in their staff.

“Fonterra are very people focused and this makes for a really positive workplace.”

The family rents a 3 acre lifestyle block, similar to their former Bombay home but at a fraction of the cost, and are looking to buy something similar.

“We did a lot of research into the various areas around Taranaki, spoke to the locals and spent a few weekends exploring the region before settling on Egmont Village. From home we can be up the mountain in 10 minutes and in the heart of the city in 20.”

“We really wanted to live close to the mountain and get into tramping, which we’ve been able to do, and it’s easy getting to schools. We have a good primary school just down the road, and our eldest goes to New Plymouth Boys’ High School by bus each day.”

And as a native of the UK, Richard can’t speak highly enough of Taranaki’s weather, though can’t wait to see some snow on the mountain.

“Making the move to Taranaki has bought our family closer. We’re able to spend much more time together, and the mountain, parks and beaches are amazing.”

The Tysons are currently encouraging family members in Auckland to move to Taranaki as well, at least in part so they don’t have to deal with Auckland’s traffic when they go to visit.
